The Royal Navy

The Royal Navy has been actively monitoring the Russian spy ship Yantar as it transited through the English Channel, marking the second such occurrence since November. Defence Secretary John Healey reported that Yantar, known for its capability to gather intelligence and map critical undersea infrastructure, was closely tracked by Royal Navy vessels, including HMS Somerset and HMS Tyne. In a strategic move, a Royal Navy submarine was authorized to surface near the Russian vessel as a deterrent, prompting Yantar to exit UK waters and proceed towards the Mediterranean.

In response to potential threats to undersea infrastructure, the UK is enhancing its protective measures. This includes deploying P-8 Poseidon and Rivet Joint maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft to support NATO's Baltic Sentry operations, following recent damage to the Estlink2 undersea cable between Estonia and Finland. Additionally, the UK has activated "Nordic Warden," an advanced AI system designed to monitor the Russian shadow fleet and safeguard undersea assets.

Defence Secretary Healey emphasized the UK's commitment to national security, stating, "We see you, and we will take action to protect our national interests." He also noted that the Royal Navy has adjusted its rules of engagement, allowing for closer tracking of suspicious vessels and authorizing submarines to surface near them as a deterrent.
